Belly Dance
It comes from many cultures. Mostly those that are not familiar to us in America. It has caught on in America and has steadily grown. It has taken a foothold in the women of America as a hobby, a pastime, an addiction, a love, a passion and so much more.
I took this dance up a few years ago as a healing measure and quickly became addicted. The addiction continues to grow.
I am now putting on Haflas locally. It is part of my addiction to the dance and the culture.
This dance is beautiful, healing, empowering, and brings people together. There is a family here. A sisterhood here. Even amidst jealously and competition at times. We encourage and cheer each other on when we present our best stuff. We ponder over costumes and relish in lovely flowing fabrics and shiny gems. We decorate our hair, our faces, and our bodies with lovely jewels and sparkly things. We feel like girls again. We get to step outside of our serious lives and live freely, if only for a moment. We get to dance and tap into the nature and rhythms of life. It releases our inhibitions, it releases our tension and stress, and it builds us up.
I have met many people that regardless of what was going on in their lives, they put on their belly dance attire and performed as if in that moment nothing else existed. That to me is strength and courage. It is also a shining example of how strong and beautiful women are. Although, this is primarily a female dance form, no offense is meant to those of our male counterparts who have also joined in the addiction, for they too, have found the magic and the mysticism in this dance.
I thank you all for sharing your all your energies with the world in your dance.
